About Us
The Capital City Children's Chorus came into being in October 1993 Our goal was to create a chorus of unchanged voices to perform high caliber music for the public, for their own enrichment and their enjoyment. The instructors, Mrs. Newman, Mrs. Lindbloom, and Mrs. Beemer attended workshops and researched existing children's choruses prior to organizing. The city Recreation Department agreed to become our fiscal agent, and Pierre Public Schools allowed us use of rooms and equipment. After applying for non-profit status, incorporation took place and the name Capital City Children's Chorus became official.

The chorus is open to any child in the public, private, or home school. Through auditions, they are to be chosen on their ability and dedication to the betterment of the chorus. Rehearsals include large group training, small ensembles and sequential theory work.

The chorus is active in performance opportunity in and outside of the community. Some of our performances have included: The Fighting Stallions Memorial Dedication Services, SD dedication of Becker-Hansen Building, Dedication of the Tourist Center, Community-State Day, Pierre-Ft. Pierre Community Chorus Concerts, Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce Legislative Welcomes, Mount Rushmore, SD Music Educators Convention, Signing of the Nations Anthem at the Minnesota Twins Metrodome, Coors Stadium Denver, Colorado, and New York Yankees at the Yankee Stadium in June of 2001. We represented the state of South Dakota at the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in 1997, and performed a 25-minute prelude at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

In the fall of 1998, via blind taped auditions, we were selected to perform at the MENC North Central Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in December of 1998, we performed in concert with the South Dakota Symphony, under the direction of conductor Henry Charles Smith. In the fall of 1999, we sponsored a Native America Day program in the rotunda, and premiered a piece written by Barbara Wolfman entitled "Reconciliation." The spring of 2000 included training in Omaha with Dr. Randall Stroope, conductor of the Nebraska Children's Chorus. In June of 2001, we traveled to New York City, performing at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and held and exchange concert with the Harlem Boys and Girls Choirs. In December 2002, we performed "Ceremony of Carols" in the Capital Rotunda with harpist Anna Vorhes and incorporated choreography by Deb Workman, both of whom are on the South Dakota Arts Council touring roster. In April 2003, we traveled to Hawaii where we competed in a choral festival, performed at the USS Missouri, and sang for the Hawaiian Youth Opera. In June 2004, the chorus followed the Lewis and Clark trail to Bismarck and Mandan, North Dakota, a commemoration of the 200th anniversary of their expedition.

Through singing, listening, and musical analysis, we master a wide range of repertoire representing a rich diversity of World and American music. We continue to grow as artists as we are challenged by great choral music and develop a life-long love of the arts.
